Berlin is not Germany -- or so Im told repeatedly by people who live in the city, over my four days in the countrys capital. They mean this in a good way: Its unique, they say, because of its lack of regulations, its large and increasing immigrant population, its bohemian flavour, and its open, experimental spirit. given up these qualities, its unsurprising that the nightlife is fantastic.
Its been a unique consecrate for a long time, says Jake Fairley, a.k.a. Canadian expat techno producer Fairmont, who came to Berlin in 2004. Its early on a Monday afternoon, and were sipping hair-of-the-dog pints of Berliner Pils with his flatmate and fellow producer, Sheldon Sid Le Rock Thompson in an old-school tavern called Schnelle Quelle (Quick Source) in Mitte, on the former East side. Theres all manner of bric-a-brac on the walls; an electric darts appliance lurks at the back, and naughty Victorian pictures adorn the doors.
The bar has a radically different atmosphere from the techno clubs that are usually synonymous with Berlin nightlife; for Fairley and Thompson, this is ideal. They both came to Berlin before it was fashionable for a growing biotic community of Canadians. Weve been here the longest, so we tend to do pub crawls -- perplex new places, Thompson says.
Theres perhaps no remediate place in Europe to explore bizarre and wonderful bars. Since the Wall collapsed and the DDR dissolved in 1989, many run-down apartments, warehouses and force stations have been occupied by entrepreneurs and artists running lounges and clubs, with a vibrant practice of medicine scene celebrating the kind of Western music that was once suppressed by the Stasi.
