On 20 November 1916, two years after the Battle of Somme, I walked into the entrenches, smelling a putrid rotten smell at least 420000 of us were killed, wounded or missing.
The atmosphere was gloomy and cries could be heard from wholly directions. I interviewed soldiers who were resting in the horrendous dugouts in the trenches built at the start of the War.
The trenches consisted of several parts: in the front, between the British and the Germans trenches was No Mans Land, where most of the battles took place. Dead corpses were entirely over the mud and it was a truly disastrous sight. The briery wire prevented the opposing countrys troops from border district in sight. The frontline trenches were around seven feet deep and six feet across-the-board and it was impossible to see anything from the bottom of it. With the support trench, reserve trench and the communication trench at the back, it provided protection for our army. There was also artillery far from the front line and gun heightens were hardened to attack our enemies.
In the trenches, dugouts were made to protect soldiers from enemy fire and it was where they lived - the conditions were utterly atrocious and the soldiers (who all wished non to be named) complained well-nigh their lives.
First of all, the unhygienic conditions in the trenches attracted millions of rats infesting them every year, and brown rats were peculiarly frightening. They could eat mens eyes and livers and grow to the size of cats. Food was contaminated and diseases were spread. Soldiers attempted to give way rid of them by gunfire and killing them, but rats could reproduce quickly.
However that was not the only problem. Soldiers could not shower for weeks and lice grew in their filthy clothing, which disadvantage like hell.
Trench Fever was another disease misadventure around the trenches, where people had severe pain then fever. It was harrowing and took twelve weeks to recover.
