Although considered allies in WWI, ground forces and USSR turned against each other by the end of the War to end all wars. Tensions change magnitude between the two massive countries as both went by an arms race, created the Atomic bombs, and competed against each other through legion(predicate) other political issues. This time, between 1945 1949 is considered the Cold War, where Russia and the States indirectly fought.

The WWI alliance between the Soviet Union and the United States was only temporary. After the end of the war USA started the tensions by aiding the whites (The Tsarists) providing forces assistance. The whites tryed to perturbation the new communist government and USA was helping them.
Another issue that caused tensions between the two countries was the ruinicular that USA waited until 1933 to give the soviet government diplomatic recognition. This bring through annoyed the Russian government.
Above this, it was obvious that USA disapproved of their new, communistic, government, as they feared the spread of communism. This was evident in 1947 when the Containment Policy created by George Kennan was make public. This was an attempt to delay, or stop the spread of communism to surround countries in Europe.




The fact that USA had atomic bombs worried USSR as they believed them to be a threat, this lead to constant development in bombs in both countries. In 1948 USA announced their attempt to create an H-Bomb which was proved to be even much powerful. This increased the Russians fear of an attack, causing them to go further into the arms race with USA. This was a major part of the Cold War.
The famous Bay of Pigs event, where USA sent exiles into Cuba to overthrow the country, was one of the closest the two enemies, USA and USSR came to war. This is because Russia was Cubas ally, and did not want American influence in the Cuban government.
