Instead, he prefers roaming slightly with his dog Wolf, engrossing experiences. He is not an idle personality, as his wife, hiss Van Winkle, declares but energetic in his own way. In fact, he could be described as an anti-hero, callable to his non-conventionality. He does not succumb into any kind of yoke, whether it is Dame Van Winkle or work in general. provided even though he seems as a deeply political person, he does not seem to care a great deal about the political situation of his country when he returns from his 20-year sleep. Instead, he continues his old habits, this time much more carefree than before, released from his wifes repressive presence.
Going over his character, it seems that his behavior is a way of facing the abnormalities of his life. But he lost his stopping point and aspiration trying to surpass the things that caused him melancholy. Even though he escaped his wife s dominating presence, during his long nap he missed a defining moment in American history, which now seems indifferent to him.
Recapitulating, even though a lot of things changed during his absence, Rip nevertheless remained the same person. That means that he may got away from his wife, but he missed out the opportunity to grow up as a person and deal with situations differently.
