Men have been taught that the expression of emotional pain and conflict through overt behaviors such as crying, lecture about their feelings, or seeking professional help, is a sign of weakness and not very masculine. I would say that the best way to overcome somatization disorder is with intense psychotherapy where the individual works with a mental health profession, to slowly and guardedly explore the internal deeply rooted issue that are causing the conflict. As the client continues to work with a mental health professional to consistently discover issues that have been unconsciously directing the individual behavior and coming to and understanding that they do-nothing cope with, the physical symptoms will begin to dissipate.
