Piagets surmise has both main parts, the first relates to how association is acquired, and the second deals with the incident order in which different paths of opinion develop(Nixon & Aldwinckle, 2002).Piaget suggests that tidings is adaptation, and as we amaze to experience our environment we must gear up to it. Piaget also explains the term schemata as the way we mentally organize our experiences of the world, and adaptation occurs as a termination of assimilation and accommodation, which is the process of responding to new events, or objects, using subsisting mental structures (Nixon & Aldwinckle, 2002). Piagets theory of intellectual development is confounded down into four stages; sensorimotor, Preoperational, Concrete operational, and Formal operational (Nixon & Aldwinckle, 2002).
The Sensorimotor stage is the period of infancy to early toddlerhood (usually from birth to two days of age)and is divided into six sub stages, where children move from physiological reaction dominated responses, to the beginnings of symbolic thought, as language starts to be utilize to represent reality.
Children in this stage obtain and use knowledge primarily through motor action and sensory information (Nixon & Aldwinckle, 2002).
The Preoperational stage covers the period between two and seven years of age, and is divided into two sub stages (Nixon & Aldwinckle, 2002). During this stage of cognitive development, children begin to think independently of actions and hold representation. The ability to mentally make symbols can be seen through the use of language, drawing, pretend reanimate and dreaming.
