Parallels exist among characters and groupings of characters--Nick and Gatsby are each outsiders, Nick and Jordan parallel Gatsby and Daisy to a degree--and from these juxtapositions and interactions the reader sees an interplay of ideas, attitudes, and perceptions to develop the themes. Through all this, Gatsby stands as the alienated man who desires to cross the bay and turn into part of the milieu different from any he has ever known.

Fitzgerald could see a few of the detrimental benefits of affluence as the false images of marketing worked to shape American life in a new way, significantly as the eyes of Dr. T.J. Eckleburg gaze down in judgment on a folks passing below: "The eyes of Doctor T.J. Eckleburg are blue and gigantic--the retinas ar 1 yard high" (27).

This latter symbol is the most striking within the novel, and it is related to New York, for it's seen whenever the characters go to that city. New York City has a unique role in this novel. The novel takes location largely in West Egg, but the West Eggers are all connected towards city--it is where they live at specific times, where they work, and in which they go for entertainment. Jordan knows that Tom includes a mistress in the city. For the West Eggers, the city is really a locale for hypocrisy, social disintegration, and bleakness.

 

There is true life inside the city, life of the type envied by Carraway: "I began to like New York, the racy, adventurous feel of it at night, as well as the satisfaction that the constant flicker of individuals and machines gives on the restless eye" (61). Yet there's an ambivalence on the city, as noticed from the reality that the city can also be the source in the ashes that leave a deadened landscape inside area in between the city and West Egg, a landscape overseen by the eyes of Dr. T.J. Eckleburg.

Gatsby inside the end does not glimpse to change due to the fact he enters with a romantic concept on the world, a dream that he has had due to the fact childhood, and he never relinquishes that dream, even though he is destroyed by it. Jay Gatsby is each observer and observed, and yet he remains somewhat shadowy by the end of the novel. Gatsby is never fully explored since he is usually observed, and we can understand only what Nick learns. Gatsby interacts on the individuals of West Egg, but his experiences are noticed from the eyes of Nick Carraway and not through his very own consciousness. This leaves Gatsby a lot more mysterious being a character. Inside the early component with the novel, Fitzgerald uses uncertainty about Gatsby's background to make a sense of mystery, but once Gatsby's background is explained, the men and women of West Egg believe they know him and can pigeonhole him. In truth, we never extremely know Gatsby the way we know a character
